Broadcasters want Congress to mandate FM receivers in cell phones. Why, critics complain, would the government mandate an “obsolete,” “dying” technology that “nobody wants”?

…in June, as opposed to 6,316 and 2,911 respectively just two years ago.
Bottom line: lots of folks have yet to join the great iPhone/Android/tweetorama-fest. One big reason they can’t afford to. Another they like their car FM radios and pay TV systems just fine, or at least “fine enough.”
All this has happened before
Sixty years ago everybody predicted the obsolescence of not just FM, but broadcast radio as a whole. “In 1952, death seemed imminent for network radio,” wrote the broadcast historian Erik Barnouw. “Radio is Doomed,” Look magazine proclaimed in 1949.
Jazz singer Dinah Washington agreed. “TV is the thing this year,” she declared in her hit song (circa 1952).
“TV is the thing this year,
Radio was great, but now it’s out of date
and TV is the thing this year.”
